A thermocouple consists of a welded 'hot' junction between two dissimilar metals - usually wires - and a reference junction at the opposite end. The metal alloys chosen as thermocouple positive and negative leg wires define the type of thermocouple. Selection of the proper thermocouple type for a particular application is determined by temperature expectations and by the environment in which the sensor will be placed

Type K thermocouples are recommended for continuous oxidizing or neutral atmospheres and are mostly used above 538 °C [1000 °F]. They are subject to failure if exposed to sulphur. Preferential oxidation of chromium in positive leg at certain low oxygen concentrations causes 'green rot' and large negative calibration drifts most serious in the (816 to 1038) °C [1500 to 1900] °F range. Ventilation or inert-sealing of the protection tube can prevent these issues

Mineral insulated thermocouples consist of an outer metal sheath which protects the thermocouple elements from damage and contamination, this sheath is malleable so mineral insulated thermocouples can be easily bent and formed into a variety of shapes to suit your application. The inner thermocouple elements are insulated with magnesium oxide powder, tightly packed so no air is trapped inside,  this provides great thermal conductivity

High temp industrial furnace thermocouple temperature sensor

An electrical device for high-temperature laboratory furnaces, a thermocouple, also known as a temperature sensor. Two different electrical conductors form electrical junctions to produce a mili volt at a single junction. This causes a thermoelectric effect to interpret varying measurements of temperatures.

Several types of thermocouples exist as some applications require a certain type of thermocouple. For commercial and industrial applications, Happy Electronics offers the following thermocouples:

Type K Thermocouple
Type S Thermocouple
Type R Thermocouple

Type K Thermocouple
Most commonly used, the Type K thermocouple measures temperatures from -200°C to 1300°C. This magnetic thermocouple, that’s typically made of nickel, changes its output when the material reaches its Curie point at around 200°C. The Type K thermocouple functions very well in oxidizing atmospheres, except when exposed to hydrogen (which can cause green rot).

Type S Thermocouple
High-temperature applications that reach up to around 1600°C use the Type S thermocouple. Lower temperature processes also use Type S thermocouples because of its accuracy and stability. High-temperature procedures, especially in the biotech or pharmaceutical industries, most frequently use the Type S thermocouple. Like all platinum-type thermocouples, always use a ceramic tube to protect the Type S thermocouple.

Type R Thermocouple
Like the Type S, the Type R thermocouple is used in high-temperature applications reaching up to 1600°C. However, never use Type R in reducing atmospheres. As an all platinum type, a ceramic tube should always protect Type R thermocouples.

Type B Thermocouple
Temperature applications of up to around 1700°C use the Type B thermocouple. Use this platinum-type of thermocouples in oxidizing or inert atmospheres with applications ranging from 500°C to 1600°C. Never use Type B thermocouples in reducing atmospheres. Always use a ceramic tube to protect this type of thermocouple

Sanitary RTD Sensor With Tri-Clover (TC) Connection are commonly used in the food and dairy industries. The sanitary fittings are welded to the stainless steel sheath and polished to meet 3-A Sanitary Council Standards. The highly polished finish prevents the growth of bacteria or other corrosive accumulation that might otherwise develop on standard RTD assembly connections. There are various fitting sizes and styles available. Care must be taken to ensure that the correct fitting is specified. In addition to the sanitary fittings, typical RTD sanitary temperature sensor probes are equipped with IP68 Metal head, which has a gasket and is suitable for wash down applications. Various element types and wiring configurations are available.
